A Question for Reflection

Roles of Women [M-C]

This question has two parts:

1).  I thought we could continue our conversation on what forces we believe may be contributing to people of different faiths not coming together?  What contributes to the ‘demonization’ of the ‘other,’ or, as the movie we watched suggested, the ‘dehumanization’ of the ‘other’ in today’s world?’

2).  What are some things our little group of women can do to combat these forces? What can we do to get the word out that we have far more in common than that which divides us?

  1. Question 1- I believe what held true then, still holds true today, lack of education leads to demonization and dehumanization. Unfortunately, many are not well educated and those that often are, are subject to study one faith and learn that is the only faith that should be considered, not to explore, not to learn about the differences we each have, but more importantly the common things our faiths have. We also have a lack of willingness to truly listen to each other with understanding and sense of openness to agree to disagree on certain aspects of our religion. If we were more open, and ask the tough questions or any questions in some cases, we would learn that less divides us then brings us together. I think many close themselves up and walk around thinking their religion, whatever it may be Christianity, Islam is the only way to heaven and fail to be open minded.

Question 2- Our group can start by becoming friends with those of different faiths. The Pope does it, so why shouldn’t we? Invite those of different faiths to discuss and take on a single question or topic together and promote open and honest dialogue. Ask questions, we both have about one another in a friendly atmosphere. Because of the biggest things that divides us, part question 1 I guess, is fear…fear of the unknown and sticking to your inner circle. We need to branch out, perhaps a little discomfort at first is ok and know it is ok, don’t judge each other. Ask questions, you have been dying to ask. Why do you wear a headdress, while others do not? Do you drink alcohol? What is your diet? Shy don’t you eat pork? Why do you believe that Jesus isn’t God’s son? All of these things and more and understand that it is ok to be different. Clearly God made us all and wants us to be different, but doesn’t want us to be fighting, especially about religion. I think opening our doors to those of different faiths, going to different places of worship would be an excellent start. To get out of our comfort zones and learn more about other faiths, through movies, books, going to a mosque, etc.. I’d love us to go to each others services and then share a meal that we would normally make for our family. Something we do during Lent, what we do during Advent, what they do during their holidays. Share food, drink and understand why these practices, traditions came about.
